  • What is the Mind-Body Connection?

The mind-body connection refers to the relationship between our thoughts, emotions, physical sensations and behaviors. It means that the way you feel can influence the way you think and vice versa.

Why is the Mind-Body Connection Important?

Understanding the mind-body connection reminds us of the profound influence that our thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations have on our unique sense of self. It invites us to honor and care for ourselves, holistically, nurturing our mental, physical and emotional well being, which is fundamental to healing.

  • Eating Disorder:

An eating disorder is a diagnosed mental health condition characterized by disturbances in eating habits, thoughts, and emotions related to food. An eating disorder may also impact how one feels about their body weight and image.

Common types of eating disorders include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder.

These conditions have serious physical and psychological consequences, and require professional help from an interdisciplinary care team, including a doctor, registered psychotherapist, and registered dietitian.

    Disordered Eating:

Disordered eating refers to a range of irregular eating behaviors that do not meet the criteria for a diagnosed eating disorder but still deviate from eating patterns that promote physical and emotional well-being.

It can include behaviors such as restrictive eating, frequent dieting, excessive exercise, or frequent episodes of overeating and shame.

Disordered eating still negatively impacts one's physical and mental health, but the severity and patterns may not meet the criteria for a specific eating disorder.

It's important to note that both can have serious health implications, and seeking professional help is advisable for either situation.

  • In Canada, a registered dietitian (RD) is a regulated healthcare professional with specialized training in dietetics, holding a bachelor's degree in the field and undergoing supervised practical training. They are registered with provincial regulatory bodies and are authorized to provide medical nutrition therapy, assess nutritional needs, and offer dietary counseling in various settings.

Conversely, the term "nutritionist" is not regulated, allowing individuals without specific qualifications to use it. While some nutritionists may have education in nutrition-related fields, they lack the same level of clinical training and oversight as registered dietitians.

Therefore, while both may offer nutrition advice, registered dietitians have higher credentials and expertise in clinical nutrition and medical nutrition therapy.
